Department of lousy UI design
Jul. 22nd, 2005 05:40 pmAn open letter to Symantec (sent as product feedback):
I just ran LiveUpdate to get new virus definitions and other updates for Norton Antivirus. When I clicked the Finish button, it popped up a dialog that read: "Restart Required. Some of the updates that were just installed require that you restart your computer now. Please save all unsaved data and then press the OK button to restart your computer."
There is no Cancel button on this dialog. There should be. There should be a Cancel button on any dialog that will reboot your computer. The only exception to this rule is if the dialog is going to shut down your computer to prevent it from physically catching fire.
I have six ssh sessions open to various Unix machines. I have two web browsers open. Regenerating my computer's current state will take me at least 15 minutes, probably longer. I have stuffed your useless dialog down into the bottom right corner of my screen, with the button hidden out of range of where the mouse can reach.
With a better UI design, I would be able to tell the dialog "no, I'll reboot later" and make it go away, instead of having to stash the dialog box off into a corner. Please give me a Cancel button -- preferably in the next patch of Norton Antivirus. Otherwise I will be looking into Macafee.
