I took my dog, Elsa to the vet on 4/1 for a rabies booster and a general exam. The vet said that she had a gum infection, and gave me antibiotics to feed her for it. She's scheduled for dental work on 4/19. She's thoroughly enjoying the antibiotics, as she won't take them plain, but is perfectly happy to eat them if they're stuck in a lump of cream cheese.
So when i woke up this morning, and found a moderate-sized bloodstain on the floor, I figured something had bled in her mouth overnight from the gum infection. I took her for her morning walk, cleaned up the blood and went to work.
When I got home tonight, there were over a dozen similarly-sized bloodstains on the floor, in various degrees of freshness. I muttered something about the gum bleeding not clearing up, took her for her evening walk, and started cleaning up the mess on the floor. While I was doing so, Elsa lay down to watch me while I was cleaning.
I finish up, and start getting ready to go to my tax preparer appointment. Elsa gets up and walks over to me, hoping for pats. There's a new bloodstain on the floor, where she was lying down. But the new bloodstain is not where her head was.
I look under her, at her belly. THERE IS A LARGE HOLE IN MY DOG.
Once I get over being shocked and appalled by this, I call the vet, who refers me to the local 24-hour emergency animal hospital. I take Elsa to the emergency vet. It turns out the hole is a ruptured abscess of some sort, origin yet to be determined. They're keeping her to clean out the wound and take some tissue samples to see if they can figure out what caused the abscess.
The whole time, Elsa was acting perfectly normally, as if nothing is wrong. Either the ruptured abscess didn't hurt much, or she just didn't care. I suspect that the bloodstain this morning was from the same wound, so she had it for at least 12 hours before I noticed it.
I will update when I have more information.
