The good, the bad...

Good: The Lowell fire department responds promptly and in significant force to a fire alarm in my condo building.
Bad: Discovering this when the fire alarm went off and woke me from a dead sleep. Good grief is that loud...

It turned out to be a false alarm. I just hope that it was in the alarm system itself (i.e. no random asshat pulled the alarm) and that it gets fixed quickly.

I know they make them mind-numbingly loud so that even the extremely hearing impared and deaf people can feel them and be alarmed properly, but I find that much noise disorienting and find I have to follow the crowd because I can't think for myself with that much clamour. I have not experienced the alarm in the building you are in, but at work at the last three jobs all those buildings were just that damned loud. At the oldest of those jobs, the deaf person I worked with even commented that he knew something was up from the vibrations.
