I'm off to see the wedding! The wonderful wedding of ... um... er... foo. Can't figure out a way to make "my sister" scan into that. Oh well.

Tomorrow evening I'm off to the Flyover Zone (specifically: Bloomington, IN); I'll be there through Sunday. With no net. Whatever shall I do? Prompt suggestions are welcome!

Now why was I unable to come up with that?

Bloomington, IN? Why sure, first thing you do is...

...get the hell out of Bloomington. Chicago, Ann Arbor, Cleveland and Cincinnati are all within a few hours' drive.

Barring that, bring a book. :)

Bloomington wasn't that bad. It reminds me vaguely of Ann Arbor and East Lansing -- unsurprisingly so. And while I did enough driving to have reached Chicago, it was all shuttle service to and from Indianapolis International Airport....

This should keep you busy.

There must be something redeeming about Bloomington. If they're not obvious, go hunt for them. I mean, it's a college town after all. Check out Monroe Lake, or the Oliver Whinery (oldest in Indiana!) gives tours and lets you picnic by their lake (can't say I've ever had Indiana wine, so I'll expect a report :). In fact, you might be able to try some at the Scholars Inn Gourmet Café & Wine Bar on N. College Ave. Go hunting for Vernors and have lots and lots of floats. There's a Farmers Market on N. Morton street on saturday mornings.

The Tibetan Cultural Center (3655 Snoddy Rd) was opened by a previous Dalai Lama (Thubten Jigme Norbu roamed the globe and eventually settled in Bloomington, teaching.) Two of this continents first Buddhist temples are there. There's also Dagom Gaden Tensung Ling Buddhist Monastery (102 Clubhouse Dr.) which have gardens and let you join in meditations.

Many thanks for the suggestions! I stopped by Oliver Winery, though I was pressed for time so the tour was right out. Their wine is competent, but not inspired -- they make a good merlot, cabernet sauvignon, gewurztraminer, and riesling. They also make a sauvignon blanc which I wasn't fond of, but I usually dislike sauvignon blanc. Thanks for the suggestions! I bought three bottles of wine: riesling, muscat, and their own chardonel (hybrid grape, which they grow on premises, rather than import from New York); you're welcome to try some.

Global roaming dialup networks reach even the flyover zone.

I got rid of my cellphone in February -- I hadn't used it at all for at least five months before that. (Good riddance!)

Did I say anything about cellphones?
Dialup wired-phone networking happens even in the flyover zone.

Thanks to all who replied. I also found a brewpub and a microbrewery there, had beer from both. Mostly, though, I was busy being slave labor for the wedding -- no side trips to Chicago for me.
